Menacing shelf cloud on a severe thunderstorm on July 7th 2011. A friend and I had spotted this cell on radar and visually from Maghera then gave chase, we got held up trying to get out of town by a tractor but eventually go out onto the open road and just in time when we saw this amazing sight heading straight for us, traffic was busy and we knew we would have only min's to shoot this shelf before it passed over us and was gone so we pulled onto the shoulder beside Glenshane Road with the wheels of the car sliding to a stop on the gravel road and got out rapidly like a special forces unit to shoot the storm, we did it with min's to spare so talk about timing. Fantastic sight for so early in the afternoon with a solid curved gust front/shelf cloud and very heavy precip of rain and hail behind it with sporadic rumbles of thunder and flashes of lightning. This cell knocked out the power in hundreds of homes in the Magherafelt area and was the most photogenic storm that day, read the report for more information. * All images are available for sale in the form of photo prints, canvas or digital files for licensing, if you are interested in a purchase simply drop me an email.
