My girlfriend and I did an all-day storm chase at the Co. Antrim coast on December 28th 2011 to get up close and personal to a deep Atlantic low which had produced storm force winds, we battled gusts of up to 80mph and not far from here near Donegal there was a Hurricane force blast recorded. Mix into this the horizontal foam storms and big waves not to mention a break down and it had already been a crazy and tiring day. Just as we were driving back and passing through Portballintrae a line of menacing storm cells came ashore from the ocean and passed over our location, it was dusk and getting very dark already, while outside the town I spotted a brilliant mammatus display in the rear view mirror under the cell's anvil so I pulled off the main road and pretty much mounted a shallow curb in order to get images. Being very dark it was difficult to shoot hand held however I got these images at 18mm of a rare dusk/night time mammatus display, in this image the cell was moving L to R across the road, it was a decent show too with solid looking bags with fantastic definition, a nice treat to end a long day's chasing, read the report for more information. * All images are available for sale in the form of photo prints, canvas or digital files for licensing, if you are interested in a purchase simply drop me an email. |
